Cardiac Rehabilitation is an individually prescribed program of exercise and lifestyle modification. Clients work on toning their muscles and gradually building up endurance and strength. This is done in a outpatient setting, supervised by a registered nurse.
With a 12 week diet and exercise plan, Cardiac Rehab participants see improvements in physical tolerance, cholesterol levels and well being.
The first step toward cardiac rehabilitation is to have an exercise stress test. This test, combined with your medical history and medication schedule will help determine your tolerance for exercise. The exercise component of the program consists of three phases: warm-up, endurance, and cool down. Your heart rate, blood pressure and physical endurance level will be monitored for safety. We’ll teach you how to exercise at home using self-monitoring techniques to maintain your proper heart rate.
Class sessions are just as important as the exercise sessions. We’ll help you learn to adopt a healthier lifestyle and reduce the risk of further heart problems. Classes include information on your disease, reducing your risk, managing stress, medication, nutrition and physical activity. Spouses and significant others are encouraged to attend these weekly education sessions.
The program typically consists of 24-36 exercise sessions lasting 8 –12 weeks. To receive the most benefit, clients should attend regularly. Convenient times are available to meet your personal needs.
Because the Cardiac Rehab program at United Memorial is supervised by a physician, it is covered by most insurance plans, including Medicare. Check with your provider regarding coverage.
